By the way the legendary “Am I some kind of clown, do I amuse you…” scene is not in the book and, apparently, was improvised by Joe Pesci who had seen a real mobster do something similar. I can relate to Frank. Frank was smart yet spontaneous at times. I can relate to Frank in the way that I am spontaneous and random at times. My favorite character was Tony, however. When Frank was spoken about in the novel I found him boring and dry. Tony was described as tough, aggressive, and random. I found Tony’s personality and actions much more enjoyable to read about. As bad of a person Tony is, he is still enjoyable to read about. I think the author didn’t intend for Tony to be seen this way. I think Tony was intended to be seen as a guy with bad anger and little smarts. I think Tony is seen like this but he is also seen by many as an interesting character. When Tony is talking to another character named Anthony Tony says “Listen to me Anthony. I got your head in a f***in’ vise. I’ll squash your head like a f***in’ grapefruit if you don’t give me a name.”(Pileggi). Tony is intended to seem like a guy only used to fix “problems”. Goldencrown is a casino with an interesting history, being one of the first casinos to accept both USA players and bitcoin deposits/withdrawals. It has been in business since 2009, which certainly gives it some credibility.Speaking of character names, this is by far the biggest weakness of this entire book. For whatever reason, author Pileggi feels obligated to name every single minor character in the book. This is not at all necessary when the characters really don’t add anything to the story. This only manages to confuse the reader since one’s brain really shouldn’t have to be forced to assimilate so many names of people throughout the course of the book. Let’s look at an example of what I mean. I would propose the following statement is ideal: First, the it was slightly more fast paced than I expected, with a couple of exceptions here and there. There's always something going on, and it's kinda insane how much these guys were being watched and followed by the police without getting arrested for anything relevant. Honestly, really makes evident the way the mob was just this HUGE organization, and a very untouchable one at that. Specially at the end, when we read about the leaders just offing guys they specifically said were loyal to the end, just because they couldn't take risks. He’s right. When Hill is sent to a cushy jail where he and other wise guys have the freedom to cook elaborate dinners every night, it’s an enormously revealing detail that he would mention the sauce having too much onion in it. The personality that would remember this years later, and still be so annoyed about it as to bring it up in an interview, is at the heart of what attracted Scorsese to this material in the first place.

What amazed me most is how closely the movie aligns with the book, because let’s be honest people, Hollywood screenwriters have butchered many a book. A lot of Ray Liotta’s, um, I mean Henry Hill’s classic one liners and pithy monologues are straight from the book. Much of the praise for the movie belongs to Pileggi; like the film, Wiseguy is entertaining from start to finish. It’s nonstop. A thriller and absolute banger right to the very end. And let me tell you its not a fun read. It felt like the author Mitch Pileggi was more interested in the skim so that's what he focused on but come on...I came here for the sex and murder! Reading this book about 30 years since it first published almost seems anticlimactic since we know about it in so many ways. This book, Wiseguy, is the book the film Goodfellas is based on. Henry Hill, started working for the mafia as a kid at 10 years old, and with both his intelligence and street smarts, grew to be the most trusted man in the Lucchesee crime family in NY.
